When do I need a building permit?
If the property is located within the City limits, anyone who intends to build, erect, alter, repair or remodel any structure or building or any part thereof should first apply for and obtain a building permit for residential property or a zoning permit for commercial, manufacturing or industrial property. Permits are available at the Belpre City Building or by contacting the zoning official at 740-423-7592 ext 103.
All such applications shall be accompanied by plans showing the intended additions, alterations or remodel.
The zoning official will calculate the fees and make a copy of the permit which shall be displayed on the job site.
Once the permit is issued, the next step is to contact the Southeast Ohio Building Department to determine if the project requires a permit from them. SEOBD conducts necessary inspections for the city. Some exceptions to their permitting are; repairs, sheds under 200 square feet, fencing and concrete work. Contact them at 740-374-4185 with any questions. Most permits are available online. The issued Belpre permit number is required to obtain the SEOBD permit.
Once all permits are issued, the intended work can commence. Any alterations or corrections necessary for completion will need to be approved by the zoning official and SEOBD.
